THE THIRD DIMENSION
When you first bought one of the 3D kits you probably made a
vehicle of some sort or even a simple house.Maybe later you will
have tried to reproduce your own home. This is all good practice
for getting the hang of creating 3D objects. In fact creating the
room which your computer is in is probably one of the most
visually rewarding things that you can do.You can show this to
your partner, friends etc and say "Look this is the room we are in
now".Most people are very impressed with this but others may
think otherwise.
Now the best way to impress the person who lives with you
and who probably thinks that you are bonkers for spending all
those hours creating a replica of the room,is to try one of the
following ideas to show them that it was not all a waste of time!
The room needs redecorating so you load up your kit room
replica and switch to the colour palette screen and start
recolouring the walls to show your partner how the room could
look with subtle shades of beige,a warm pink colour or even
bright purple walls etc. What about a different coloured carpet or
curtains or even new colour co-ordinated cushions!
Try moving the kit room furniture around to see what looks
the best.Remember that architects and designers use similar ways
to achieve the above. You could even design new furniture that you
have seen in a shop etc to see what it would look like if you
bought it.If you save all of your room furniture objects off as
groups then it should be very easy to move these around your room
area.
Imagine knocking the wall down to join the kitchen and room
into one big room. How about an open plan staircase,a serving
hatch or a fitted bar! What about a false lowered ceiling or a
stone fireplace!
All the above is possible to achieve using 3D kit 1 or 2 and
could even save you some money by forward planning. There is
nothing worse than choosing a room colour scheme only to find
that you don't like it once it has been redecorated.Messing about
with the kit colours of your room may give you some new ideas!
To get an idea of a scale to use simply create an exact 3D
kit copy of one of the doors in your room. Now walk towards the
real door and notice how high your eye level height is from the
top of the door when you are right up with your nose against it.
Then adjust the kit door to the same eye level height when you
bump into it by either rescaling the door or editing the area
scale size.A good area scale to start off with is either scale 4
or scale 6 or even higher if the room you are recreating will
fit. This will make it quicker to move around in etc.Once you have
created a door you can then add a wall behind it and then start
adding furniture to the left or right of the door while keeping an
eye on the height of the furniture in relation to the height of
the door.Notice where the door handle is and use this as a guide
to the height of smaller furniture. You may be surprised to see
just how small a settee and chairs are when compared to the
height of a door.Once you get one side of a room completed the
rest comes quite easily.
Once you really get the hang of this you can then start
recreating replicas of actual buildings from photographs etc.I
have placed near replicas of Coronation Street and St Annes pier
onto previous diskmags.Nigel Alefounder has even recreated a
replica of a Roman city from old ruins and data that he has
researched. It is nice to see fantasy games and buildings but
actual reproductions of rooms and buildings hold an even
greater interest.
Remember that it is not just kit games which are made into
standalone runnable programs.Once you have designed your rooms of
your house you can then send these standalone files to anyone
with a computer even if they don't have one of the 3D kits. They
will then be free to explore your house at will.I still don't
know why I placed a Dalek in my kitchen that shoots you if you
enter it or the fact that one of my bedroom doors leads you to a
desert island!
If you have reproduced something then please send it in for all
of us to enjoy.
Tony....
